If you cannot even keep count of how many products you use every day to look like magazine models, the research was done at the University of California, Berkeley to capture your attention. The researchers found that applying cosmetics (makeup, shampoo and other personal care) can substantially reduce levels of chemicals that alter the hormones in our body. It turns out that those products that you think you favor; you really do not add much rather do the opposite.
For the research, researchers gave cosmetic products to100 teenagers and those were claimed to be free of certain chemicals such as phthalic acid, parabens, triclosan and oxybenzone. These chemicals are very common in products such as soaps, shampoo, conditioner, sunscreen, among others. And some studies have shown that they directly interfere with the endocrine system (responsible for producing hormones that regulate certain functions of our body). The research was done with teenagers because it has been found that they use more products than any other group of women.
And what were the results?
After three days of tests, where urine tests were made, the levels of chemicals in the body decreased markedly. The parabens (used as a preservative in cosmetics) decreased by 45% and the metabolites of diethyl phthalate (used in perfumes) 27% and 36% triclosan. The results were scientifically important, but not only that, the teenagers also did some exercises to learn how science can improve their health and everyone around them.
It is difficult to not applying makeup, especially when you have work or party, but you can start to use more natural products (although sometimes it is difficult to know whether something really is natural). Still, you will get many organic products. Natural products are more expensive than ordinary products; you can also try making your own products.
